At Southern Cross School, the science curriculum is designed to spark curiosity, nurture creativity, and deepen pupils’ understanding of the world around them. Through the White Rose Science Scheme, we deliver a rich and carefully sequenced programme that builds both substantive knowledge and essential ‘working scientifically’ skills.
Pupils are encouraged to ask thoughtful questions, make predictions, and explore ideas through hands-on investigations. They learn to use scientific equipment accurately, carry out fair tests, and communicate their understanding using precise scientific vocabulary. Our approach promotes independent enquiry, critical thinking, and provides regular opportunities for reflection and evaluation.
We believe science is fundamental to understanding everyday life and addressing global challenges. By the end of Key Stage 3, pupils develop a strong awareness of how science shapes the world around them, providing a solid foundation for further study at Key Stage 4.
At Key Stage 4, pupils study the BTEC Level 1/Level 2 First Award in Principles of Applied Science. This course covers key scientific principles essential for both future scientists and informed citizens. It explores these principles within applied and vocational contexts, helping pupils understand how science is used in real-world situations. External assessment focuses on the core scientific knowledge outlined in the Programme of Study, underpinning progression to further education and training.
